Founders Pairing Lunch
If you like bold flavored beers, then you'll most likely love Founder's Brewing Company. We were first introduced to them right at the source in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We went to pre-wedding party there and were urged to try the Breakfast Stout that was wonderful. The Taproom is in an old train station where one whole side can open up to outside seating and their menu boasts handcrafted sandwiches. Very fun and yummy place!

Founders does not distribute to Upstate NY unfortunately. Luckily we have a couple of friends from Michigan and family in Pittsburgh (where they do distribute) that hook us up once in a while. We savor every bottle and have been lucky enough to even have Kentucky Breakfast Stout a couple of times.

Avanti Pizza Delivery
Ever since we moved to the Rochester area from the Buffalo area, the hunt for great pizza and wings has been on. Maybe it's psychological or maybe the pizza just sucks around here, but the search has been a tough one. Growing up we always got some amazing pizza and wings from places like La Nova in Buffalo and Maria's Pizzeria (sadly closed) and Cafora's right near where we grew up.

It's fitting that we didn't find a comparable place in the Rochester area until we moved a bit back west to Brockport. After trying a couple local places and being somewhat unimpressed, my Mom mentioned that there was a great place in Medina called Avanti. Looking into it we were surprised to see that they had a second location on Main Street in Brockport. We ordered from there and have never looked back. After several orders we decided a post was needed!

Mike's Recipe, April 2012 - Aaron Sanchez
For some reason Heather and I have been leaning toward Mexican-style food in a lot of our meal brainstorming as of late. We aren't really sure why but I knew it was a focus I wanted to have for my April new recipe. Aaron Sanchez is probably my favorite Chopped judge so I focused my search around his recipes.

The first one I found that look enticing was Argentinean Steak with Parsley Sauce. It's almost grilling season and I've been wanting to try my hand at cooking a steak. The parsley/chimichurri sauce sounded really interesting to me as well. The inclusion of raw jalepenos was equal parts intriguing and scary. The steak alone didn't feel like quite enough food so I went looking for a side dish as well. I ending up deciding to make his Chorizo and Cornbread Stuffing. There wasn't anything to not like about that recipe. It sounded straightforward and who doesn't like chorizo?

Heather's Recipe for April 2012 - Risotto
I've never made risotto, so after making pasta fagioli a comforting go-to dinner, I decided that I better learn how to make risotto since it has a similar creamy texture. A friend also gave me a bottle of wine so it was the perfect time to use it both in the recipe and a glass to complement the dinner.

I followed Ellie Krieger's Garden Risotto recipe but opted to top it with roasted asparagus instead of adding the veg. I wanted the spring asparagus to shine.

Save The Adoration
Many a beer aficionado can point to that magical moment that converted them. It showed them that beer and yellow, fizzy water are in fact two different things. For me this moment was at a restaurant at a Baltimore art gallery in February of 2008.

I was down there for a business trip in DC and I ended up going out to dinner with some family members of my colleague. We were there a little early so we found ourselves waiting at the bar. To this point, my beer yellow, fizzy water of choice was Labatt Blue. As you go south, it gets harder and harder to find, so rather than risk the bartender acting confused about the request, I asked him to pick out a beer for me. I've come to learn that this is very rarely a mistake.

Vacation - Buffalo Bill's Brewery
The last stop we made (just before heading to the airport) on our recent trip to San Francisco was at Buffalo Bill's Brewery. It's taken a while to sit down and write this post and it's hard to say specifically why. The visit was a bit of a let down though. Was it because it was our last stop on a busy trip? Does everything pale in comparison to our trip to Russian River? Or was the brewpub just not that exciting?

Of all the places we went while out in San Francisco, Buffalo Bill's was the only one that had been on our bucket list. Orange Blossom Cream Ale and Blueberry Oatmeal Stout are two of our favorite beers. We wanted the trip to feel like a pilgrimage of sorts and it didn't live up to that.
